Game Universe
Pimp War has cities, with each city having its own local ranking system and travel prices. Gangs may be formed in any city to add a sense of protection to its members, and a feeling of retribution for those who find themselves in harm's way. Players may choose any number of ways to play the game, but the emphasis is on having the most networth by the end of the round. Typically, most rounds last around 30 days.
Game Goals
We aim to continue provide a fun, immersing game in which people can compete and form friendships. There has always been a focus on community and we'd like to see even more community involvement in various gameplay changes as well as game moderation.
We pride ourselves on using new technology in creative ways to create one-of-a-kind gameplay experiences. As long as the players are interested we will be too.
Development
Pimp War was conceptualized in a dorm room and before it was even playable we had hundreds of people signing up. Initially the game was hosted on a friend's server. Over the next year we got up to speed on programming and game architecture and design. We then had some rather clunky-looking 600 MHz (or less) servers donated to us along with colo space which allowed us to have our first real web presence.
In 2001 we reached 30,000 players in the game due to an alternative weekly publishing a story titled "Early morning stoned accountant." This was then picked up by other sites and the server loads spiked. We purchased several new servers and leased more space in our datacenter. We had a little bit left over so we upgraded our single unit econos to double-wides. We eventually split the game into a number of game modes to give players choices in how much time they wanted to spend in the game.
Developer's story
In 1999 we'd been playing other browser games and there weren't a lot of choices. The game was initially only a log-in screen and a very rough menu. We've come a long ways since then and have met some very cool people.
