Adylheim is an original fantasy play by post game, a place where the imagination alone sets the limits for what you can do. The world of Adylheim is filled with strange races and monsters which owe as much to folklore as fantasy literature. Mysteries wait in the towers of the magi, intrigue in the courts of the great lords and ever-ravenous trolls in the mountains; ogres wait in the swamps for the unwary, and the courts of Faerie lurk hidden from all. Writers, roleplayers and gamers are always welcome to delve into Adylheim's world of myth and adventure.

Our motto is, "Roleplay first." To that end we have done our best to remove as many of the tedious parts of running a world simulation as possible. There are no threads necessary for leveling up; all it takes is the requisite amount of experience, awarded by our generous moderators. You do not need to spend time shopping for every little item; all items which carry little significance can be assumed to have been bought or given in some form of another. A lot of what goes on in Adylheim is done "off stage", in the time between threads and we like to take advantage of this to put all those tedious details of your character's life that you would rather not roleplay right there.

Every PC can and should be able to make an impact on the world of Adylheim. If a PC wants to destroy a fiefdom or conquer it, this is certainly within the realm of possibility. The environments should be considered durable and elastic, the NPCs expendable and the plots customized to your personal cup-of-tea.

There is no good vs. evil struggle in Adylheim and no races which are specifically evil or races which are specifically good. Instead, there is a variety of causes and banners to rally behind, with room for more. A two-sided conflict creates little possibility for character development and nuance. In Adylheim we delight in the shades of grey.

For all of us here, Adylheim represents a labour of love. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we have.

Game Universe

Adylheim is set in seven fiefdoms which remain in the aftermath of the fall of an ancient empire, and the surrounding wilderness. Each fiefdom has its own theme and flavor. Two fiefdoms are currently the focus of the game: the Prelarchy of Arameia and the Archduchy of Starkwater. Arameia is what remains of the old Arameian Empire, retaining its old capitol and its old pride; but the Emperor and his court have been usurped by the Church of Luxor, leader of the gods. Starkwater is a cold, northern feudal land, where the minor wars of the lower nobles for the Archduke's favor are simply politics as usual.

There are six standard playable races, though the administration is always open to proposals for characters of other canon races. First there are the humans, the primary inhabitants of the former Arameian Empire, who are in turn members of any of four different subraces, each with its own distinctive appearance and traditional culture. Second is a fifth human subrace that can no longer interbreed with other humans, earning it the distinction of its own race - these are the Ursidaen, men who can shapeshift into bears. The third is elves - but you wouldn't recognize them. Neither beautiful nor cultured, they are wild nomads of the woods, the Fair Folk gone native after too much time in the human world. Fourth, ogres - giant, amphibious brutes who love nothing more than cracking skulls. Fifth are the Dae'Vol - telepathic, xenophobic humanoids that feed on magic, and have neither noses nor mouths. Farthest away live the dragonkin - a monastic race which has spent the past twenty thousand years awaiting the return of their dragon gods.

Game Goals

The number one goal is to have fun. To this end, we want a friendly, active, imaginative community of players. We want a close-knit yet welcoming community, with a minimum of drama and a willingness to play cooperatively together. We want to continue providing entertainment to our players for years to come.

Development

Adylheim was designed as a result of a total of 28 years of play by forum experience coming together in four very able individuals.

Between these four individuals we created a game we believe stands for itself. The backbone of it is phpBB, with a Drupal front end which serves as a repository for information.

Developer's story

The four founders of Adylheim were veteran and active members of other play-by-post roleplaying games, until they seized the chance to make their own game. After a few false starts and a lot of brainstorming, they came up with the world of Adylheim. They built the world, wrote writeups, and finally, they invited some of their fellow veteran roleplayers to join and begin playing.
