"It has been three-hundred and six years since the end of the Dragon War on Mykiana. The magic which ended the war ran wild for nearly three hundred years, seeking out and devouring the living. The sleep shields cast around the cities slowed down time for the inhabitants, while keeping them safe, and hidden from the bloodthirsty magic. Now, that magic is gone, and a way to disperse the shields has been found. Although centuries have passed, it has only seemed like decades to those who were held under the spell, and the world is far different than they remember.
Nearly all of the wildlife had been killed off by the magic which ran wild. Few species remained, and many seemed lost forever. While those in power squabbled over land, and rulership, the commonfolk saw the dire need that their world was in. Much of the land was no longer claimed by anyone. They began to make their own claims, only instead of building new homes, and palaces, they let the land remain wild. They gathered the few remaining specimens, and began the slow, but steady process of ensuring the survival of the remaining animals.
Now they need help. The project has grown so large, that they can no longer handle it themselves. So they are seeking volunteers who are willing to help save this dying world, and its rich diversity."
Mykiana is a new type of breeding and pet sim. We have several new features which I have yet to see in any other game like this. Our breeding system, while not currently as complex in genetics as some others, has a different complexity, which allows for endless possibilities. Our breeding only system adds a puzzle like quality to the game. Users can decide to simply breed for colours, and basic markings, or they can try to figure out how to meet requirements for several breeding only breeds, markings, and features. These requirements can be anything from a simple random chance, to stats, markings with certain strengths or colours, etc.
Breeding itself is also a small puzzle. While there will undoubtedly eventually be guides for those who don't like to figure things out on their own, Mykiana takes a more realistic approach to breeding. You need specific types of land, and items, and those requirements vary depending on what species, and breeds you are breeding.
We also plan to have silverlight games, and other features, like lineage explorers. Our current silverlight realtime custom generator is quite popular, and I have high hopes that being able to bring interactive games into the pet breeding genre will help make Mykiana even better.

Game Universe
Mykiana is set in a world which I created for writing purposes. It has nations, and history. At the beginning of currect history, a great war ended. This war had been between the most elite of society before nearly everyone was wiped out. Great dragons (of which true dragons haven't been seen since the end of the war) fought against, and with, those who governed the entire world. The magics which were used to end the war had an unexpected side effect. They couldn't be stopped, and they sought to devour all life.
Sorcerers and other magic casters who survived the initial outpouring of magical life-devouring energy managed to cast protective "sleep" shields around some of the cities and towns. These shields protected the inhabitants from the magic, and slowed down time. While centuries passed on the outside, mere decades passed on the inside.
A way was eventually found to stop the magic, and remove the sleep shields. Nearly everyone who knew what happened had been outside of the protective sleep shields, and had been consumed by the magic.
All that the civilians knew, was that everything they knew was gone. The animal life was nearly eradicated. Kings and nobles fought over land, while a select few decided to try and restore the world's natural balance.
Game Goals
I have a never ending supply of ideas for Mykiana. Enough breed, marking and feature ideas to last me for a year of releasing new content.. Even if I get other people to help with art! Features that would turn the game pretty much into a browser based MMO, with factions, and battling, and the world being affected depending on how people are playing the game...
I'm hoping that the game will become popular enough to support it's server costs, and to support me enough so that I can make all of these ideas a reality. Although, if I could get 1000 active users, I would be ecstatic.
My vision for Mykiana is huge, when it comes to the content, and features that I would like to have present in the game.
Development
I recently discovered the pet breeding sim genre, and thought it was a brilliant new take to online pet sims. However, I wasn't entirely happy with the implementation that people used. The games seemed too simple. A+B always equaled C, no matter what. There'd be small modifiers, but nothing that required people to much much thought into the game.
The economies on these things always seemed to crash as well. With no output for the animals, the "unwanted" animals would eventually become dirt cheap, and the new players would want to breed ASAP, so they'd buy, and breed these cheap animals.
After complaining to my friend for long enough, he said "You know, you could make a game". I then started gathering ideas. I had a huge list of things that would affect breeding, and how that would be done. I spent about a year on the development, and getting it ready for people.
Developer's story
When I first conceived Mykiana, I didn't know anything about web development. All I new, literally, was the bold, link, and image tags in html.
After some encouragement, I installed php, and apache on my computer, and set up a small server. I started teaching myself php and mysql through online tutorials.
I used coding the breeding script, to really figure everything out. I mean, it had everything, database queries, and input, data manipulation, and gave me a way to learn how to use various functions that would come in handy later.
I've come a long way now. From absolutely no knowledge to knowing php, mysql, css, a very small amount of javascript, soon some silverlight, html... Just goes to show that if you are REALLY dedicated, you can do absolutely anything.
It's also an interesting experience being an admin. I'm not really the popular/social type. While i interact with my users when I can, I put the game, and gameplay first and foremost on the list of important things. It's still interesting getting all of the attention that I am.
I love Mykiana though. It has been a great project so far, and I only hope that it bring in enough that I can continue to work on it.
