RSW is an intricate game of diplomacy and tactics. Players compete or cooperate to build ships, collect resources, and capture worlds. There are several character types, such as the Emperor, Missionary, or Collector; and each character type has a different goal and a different set of scoring rules.

Players start out at a single world and must gradually expand and explore the galaxy to discover (and conquer!) their neighbors. Gameplay is made in turns, typically two or three turns a week; although any turn rate is possible. Most games take about 20 turns to finish.

The victorious player is usually the one who is best able to deploy military tactics and organize effective alliances!

Game Universe

Humanity is perched upon the edge of a fantastic new discovery! Scientists have perfected a new kind of interstellar transport device, capable of moving large fleets of ships instantly from your world to any of a handful of other worlds orbiting distant stars. And from any of these other worlds, you can transport to a handful of more, still further, worlds.

In fact, there appears be an entire galaxy of interconnected worlds suddenly available to you! Who knows what discoveries await Mankind out there?

Game Goals

RSW is a hardcore strategy game, and isn't for everyone, but for certain enthusiastic gamers it is incredibly thrilling. We have a small population of dedicated players and are looking for more. I develop this game in my spare time and keep it running for my own amusement; I plan to keep it running (and free) as long as people are interested in playing it.

Development

RSW is an homage to the early play-by-mail games of the 1970's, most particularly Flying Buffalo's Starweb. These games used to be played by people with lots of scratch paper and free time. You can still play RSW the same way, if you like; but RSW also allows you to take the gameplay into the 21st century with its integrated graphical client.

Developer's story

I am a professional game developer, but building and maintaining this game is my hobby. I built it because I want to share my love for games like this with the rest of the world!
