GoldFire Studios, creator of real-time multiplayer games for the web, today announced the relaunch of one of its flagship games, PokerRPG (http://pokerrpg.com). PokerRPG has provided a unique gameplay experience that combines role-playing with social poker for the past six years. Today's relaunch of the game signals the start of a renewed effort to take advantage of cutting-edge browser technologies to bring real-time gameplay to the web.
According to James Simpson, CEO of GoldFire Studios, “web games have grown stale over the last few years, while the rest of the web has been catching fire with amazing new technologies such as HTML5.” Until now, GoldFire Studios wasn't the exception, but over the last year they have been reorganizing their studio to focus on development for the new web, starting with the overhaul of PokerRPG.
“We didn't want to release yet another incremental update, we wanted to change the game and rebuild it from the ground up,” says Simpson. This truly real-time gaming experience requires no downloads or plugins and is made possible through some new technologies such as WebSockets, Node.js, MongoDB and native browser animations that take full advantage of hardware acceleration. Simpson said “these new browser technologies allow us to create software-like experiences right in the browser, making the same game experience available on any platform.”
Social games on Facebook and other platforms brought a host of new players into gaming, and according to Simpson, a new wave is just around the corner. “We’ve barely begun to tap the possibilities of the web as a legitimate gaming platform, the future of browser gaming is very exciting.” This excitement starts with the launch of these free poker tables, but according to GoldFire Studios, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
