The Last Knights

The Last Knights

The Last Knights is most easily described as the board game "Risk" where you are just a single army that is part of a country. You are the commander of your own band of soldiers, but you are nothing without the other officers in your country. You have to work together with real players in order to capture cities of other countries until you and your allies are the only ones standing. The game relies greatly on communication between players. There is no storyline but to survive the players are forced to make one within the boundaries of the rules of the game. You can play by training and improving your own soldiers or by being a leader among the officers in your country or even coordinate attacks between your and an allied country.

Game Universe

You are a military man in medieval europe, or since recently asia. You can play this game individually, training your small band of soldiers while raising your own rank from private to general or higher, but the real game should be experienced through the cooperation with other players. In the major wars, even the leaders only control a very small part of all the actions, most of the things they plan need to be executed by others. This makes the experience of being a wartime leader significantly more realistic than in many other games. You can be a great strategist, but do you have a backup plan for when you lose contact with one of your generals, and will he be well enough instructed to complete his mission? Or are you one of those generals and can you be counted on when the situation requires a fast response or accurate timing?

Game Goals

The Last Knights is not a new game and has never been very large, mainly because of its time requirements. However, it does not know its equal on the web and as a text based game it is timeless so it will have its place online for a long time to come.

Development

I myself had been playing with the idea of The Last Knights for maybe a year but it wasn't till I was told of a game made by a classmate of my little sister that I decided that if he could make a game, surely I could make mine too. I released it only 2 weeks after I started programming on it, which was basically a simple map with 5 european countries and maybe 20 cities that could be conquered by the players when they cooperated. Also there was individual training that made you raise in rank and lead more fellow players. The first age lasted around a month and a half and and ended with under 100 active players. Probably partly because the game ran on a 100MHz server and the half-hourly update script took 10 minutes to complete, during which the game was unplayable. For the second age I took the guess to get to a paid server for 50 euro a year. It reached 1000 players in about a week. This caused a huge amount of performance and data traffic problems and the game was nearly killed by its own popularity. Fortunately when I was about to give up I received help from someone else and learned a lot about writing more efficient php and mysql. The game eventually reached around 5000 players in its best year. Currently the game still has a strong core of addicted players, but the total number of players is stuck around 1500 for years. It should be said that this game is not for everyone since it requires a huge investment of ones time to fully appreciate it, but when you can afford this it is one of a kind. It is probably one of the few text based browser games that can really have you sitting on the edge of your chair hoping that things will work out the way you planned them.

Developer's story

This is what I spent many of my evenings on during my study. It taught me a lot about web development and that is still clear when I now look at the oldest parts of the code :)
